I only started smoking the occasional ciggie at the age of 18 despite having a father who smoked , when i hit Uni and found myself struggling to fit into an unfamiliar world. But i still remember the day i stood in front of the cigarette machine and argued with myself as to whether i would take that step of buying my first pack....if only i could go back in time and shake the crap out of my younger self and have walked away.
I started on the heavies and thats where i stayed , from PJ dark Blue till i was travelling with my Dutch father to Europe to meet the rellies i had only ever heard about. It was then i switched to duty free Marlboro Reds in the days when you could buy a few cartons at ridiculously cheap prices. My partner had tried smoking but only for 3 months.
I had only ever smoked outside so that was the norm , and oh how many nights i would stand out in freezing wind and rain just to get that fix.
Thankfully none of our kids have ever wanted to smoke which was a huge relief for both of us .
I did try giving up a few times using willpower but without success. Dr prescibed me Zyban which my body reacted to with frightening heart attack symptoms as my chest wall and muscles went into violent and painful spasms. After a ECG cleared me of a heart attack i was warned never to take it again due to the severe and supposedly rare side effect.
I figured better the devil you know and continued smoking. Hypnotherapy worked for only a week, and i tried the quit inhaler which was dismal..then along came Champix and i did manage to last 3 months at a challenging and stressful time as we left dairying behind , moved into town on a few acres, and began a new job working for a boss. And then as soon as everything settled down i found myself reaching out for my old companion in my top pocket and was soon back puffing away on 30+ a day.
Then in Jan 2013 i was knocked down by a speeding hit &run moron while using a light controlled pedestrian crossing while working, which brought everything to a grinding halt. Trapped between workcover and an abusive employer for daring to get injured, dealing with the chronic 24/7 pain , PTSD and the added stress of having to go through the court system twice over due to the drivers appeal on his slap on the wrist 6 months loss of licence for 5 careless driving convictions including fleeing the scene, which he did get back...you guessed it..my habit increased to 40+ a day .
No longer being able to work meant i could no longer justify the exorbant amount i was spending each week on cigarettes. I searched online and found Green smoke cig likes but unfortunately for me it became a habit of dual using rather than the quitting i was aiming for .
Then i found avf , began to read and discovered there were better alternatives out there. And due to the support, friendship and freely shared info here and members patience with answering questions , i bit the bullet , bought my nic, got myself a basic kit and much to my amazement i was able to give the smokes away with the first vape on my set up and kick my 27 year smoking habit for good with the positive support of my doc, pysch and family.
The past 4 years as a vaper have seen me drop my nic level from 24 to 12( any less and I find my mental health suffers), become a lover of unflavoured only and having learnt what my preferred hardware is to keep tootle puffing happily for years to come, I have found my happy place with most of my tanks taking the aspire coils now. So now my vaping supplies are made up of
silo lites/cerotanks/Davides -little bvc coils
vika fantasy/nautilus/ceravape hygeia/silo-nauty coils
and a few aerotanks.
My Mods and backups include
istick picos,
smoant knight V2s(my new fav mod)
,some original isticks and a vamo or 2 ....so along with my unflavoured stash I am prepared for the future whatever happens.
Unflavoured has meant that my coil life is around 4-5 weeks and although I have plenty stashed away...my next goal is to try and learn how to rebuild my coils.
i am so grateful to the Vaping community here and previously avf for generously providing me with the support, friendship, & knowledge needed to be able to be where I am today as a proud vaper.Having never been in a vape store, and being out in the sticks, you all played an important role in my vaping journey !! I am looking forward to seeing our new home here grow and develop .
