I've: Signed the petition (over 66,000 signatories now); Emailed the PM; Emailed Minister Hunt; Emailed my Local Member (Pat Conaghan) ; and ordered what I can.
I'm not hopeful but what else can we do?
In the emails I gave a brief story (same as many - smoked for over thirty years but no success in stopping until I found vaping which has stopped me smoking for well over five years and now expect to return to smoking once supplies run out). In the email to my local member I also made reference to the Senate 'Inquiry into the Use and Marketing of Electronic Cigarettes and Personal Vaporisers in Australia' [which I thought was a bit heavy-handed but what Minister Hunt has done has exceeded its recommendations and Government response at the time].
Mr Conaghan promptly responded to my email (nothing from the others) and said that he "was one of the original signatories. It just wasn’t reported in the media" so it looks like we have another vape-friendly MP.
Oh, it's very legit.. the push from inside his own party and the backlash from some politicians over the arrogance of slyly pushing through a bill/motion without consensus has really put Hunt the Buy FM a Houseboat on the back foot..
OK while that is absolutely STONKING news on the "Ban" I think its really important now to get behind whatever legal challenges are set into motion in the upcoming 6 months when we find ourselves back at GroundHog Day ....
Finally vapers got together in Arms and with a common goal ... its IMPORTANT to keep it that way , even tho the initial threat is curtailed ...
Its also a great time to pat each other on the back , just for a minute , because although it is being presented as a "hiccup" in Hunts plans , it really was a major arse whumping for him
ViA isnt necessarily the place to stage a coup from , but we have many members who CAN keep this pressure up .. and importantly we have been getting some amazing page views from vapers who HAVENT joined here , but were looking for info ... it doesnt matter if you dont join up folks , we would love it if you did , but I understand this might not be what you are about ... but member non-member alike .. we are ALL VAPERS ... and we need to keep the pressure on !
I think regulation and market supply will be the only way the Govt goes forward on this .. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT VAPING DOESNT BECOME THE CASH COW THAT SMOKING TAXES ARE ...
WE NEED TO TELL THE GOVT WE ARE OK WITH XXmg but WE WANT IT AT A SENSIBLE COST !!!
Regulate it Mr Gubbermint Man .. Tax it too ... but make it 1/10th of the cost of a packet of smokes !
We know how much nicotine sells for and if you whack 20% Taxation on current overseas retail for unflavoured Nicotine , thats fine by us
We can buy 100mg base for $15AUD currently at full retail ... so sell it to us @ $20 ( thats actually 25% tax added on ! )
Make it about giving up the smokes and replacing it with a better option at a FAIR price , thats all we ask
